On Thursday, June 23rd, a debate competition was held among the students of Nemie High School. This competition was designed so the students can hone their public speaking skills and also develop confidence in their various levels of communication.
The competition saw the students speak on the topic titled “Parents Should Allow Their Children Choose Their Own Careers.” The students were divided into two teams: A and B. While Team A, the supporting side, included names like Taiwo Barakat (SSS1), Oladele Feranmi (SSS1), and Fatukasi Tunmise (JSS2), Team B, the opposing side, included names like Owoeye Oluwaseun (SSS1), Ogungbe Samuel (SSS1), and Ogundare Semilore (JSS1).

Each team raised exhilarating arguments in order to validate their motions. The summary of Team A’s arguments was that children should be given the freedom to select careers for themselves since they know what best they could do. On the other hand, Team B argued that parents should be allowed to guide and direct the career choices of their children, especially as they have the vast level of experience to steer them on the right course. The competition also witnessed rebuttals from the speakers in brilliant attempts to raise superior arguments.

After the competition, the judges which comprised Mr. Atitola Ayotunde, the Head of Department and Miss Benjul, announced Team B the winner with a total of 85 points. Team A came a distant second with 70 points. Owoeye Oluwaseun was further declared as the Best Speaker of the day to the ululations of the audience. All speakers were however awarded.
The Proprietress, Mrs N.C. Osagie
In her speech, the proprietress of the school, Mrs N. C. Osagie who was present at the competition throughout admitted that the speakers were fantastic and showcased their ingenuity as well. She noted that the debate competition would be a regular occurrence as the school is committed to developing its students’ communication prowess. She however noted that while choosing their career choices, children should seek parental interventions and guidance lest they make the wrong steps. While children are free to choose and follow their passions, she averred that parents are needed to assess and validate their passions in ways that are not coercive.
